Description: C:\Winword\Misc\CV\billpic2.jpgBill Kuechler's academic career follows a successful industry career in information systems development and consulting. His work experience brings insight to his teaching of both IS management and technical material and brings a wealth of practical background to his research. Bill's early research focused on the Smart Object Paradigm, an object-knowledge fusion for the modeling of complex operations environments; this stream yielded an NSF grant based on his dissertation to explore a novel, automated coordination mechanism for workflow management systems - an enabling technology for virtual corporations and other emerging, global organizational forms. Later work in this area includes studies of inter-organizational workflow and coordination and web-based supply chain integration.

His recent research has focused on the potential to improve all aspects of information systems development through studies of the cognitive mechanisms by which IT professionals and business persons recognize, communicate, document and solve problems. Past projects have been directed at understanding and improving computer mediated text-based communication and IT documentation systems. Ongoing projects explore cognitive models of process coordination, and seek to understand and improve notations and systems for communicating and documenting IS requirements. Bill is active in both the IS design research and HCI (human-computer interaction) communities. Much cognitive research is focused on learning mechanisms for systems, processes and development methods and tools and so Bill's research also appears frequently in IS education journals. He is on the editorial advisory board for the Journal of Information Systems Education and is an associate editor for the Journal of Cases of Information Technology. Since August, 1999 Bill has taught in the department of Accounting and Information Systems at the University of Nevada at Reno. He has chaired the Information Systems discipline since July, 2009.
