class contribution 1: three minute pitches

contribution plan syllabus (pdf)

Section 1 schedule        Section 2 schedule

We will stop you at 3 minutes, so practice your pitch.

Submit a typwritten list of references to Judy when you present your pitch.

First, select a country that starts with a letter that is plus or minus two letters from the first letter of your last name (e.g., for Strauss I'd pick a country starting in Q, R, S, T, or U).

Then, pick a topic (one of the two below) and develop the persuasive pitch.

Finally, deliver the pitch on your assigned day (no written paper due). You can display up to two pages on the overhead projector, the first of which will be a map showing the location of your country. You can only exhibit this one map page if you are also showing a television commercial online. No PowerPoint, both to save time in class and improve your presentation style.

3 minute economic development pitch (on paper only)

Topic one: Posing as the economic development director for a country, pitch the audience of CEOs about the benefits of investing in your country, such as by opening a branch office, manufacturing plant, retail store, or other business. To persuade the CEOs, use at least three facts/trends about the the country (e.g., stability, growth, competition, or opportunities for profit). Remember - they care about what is in it for them, not what's in it for your country and you must provide evidence.

Topic two: Posing as the owner of an ad agency in your country, select a print or television ad run in the U.S. and describe how you would adapt it to sell the product in your country. Pitch the sponsoring company CEO to convince him/her that you understand the cultural differences by giving facts about why you would make each change. There should be at least three substantial changes (and additional minor changes if you desire), not simply the language of the ad or the model ethnicity. You might think about the relationship between models, favorite activities in the country, Hofstede's cultural dimensions, customs, and more.
