The median annual salary for economists reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2004 was $72,780. The middle 50percent earned between $53,650 and $96,240. The average annual salary for economists employed by the Federal Government was $89,441 in 2005. The National Association of Business Economists 2002 survey reported base median annual salaries of $125,000 plus average annual additional compensation of $60, 000 for economists employed at securities and investment firms; $108,000 plus additional compensation of $13, 000 for economists employed in consulting firms; and 82, 750 for economists in academia. Starting salaries for students with baccalaureate degrees in economics are about the same as for students with degrees in accounting and finance and above other business fields and general business.
